What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign (ascendant) is the sign that was coming up on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Your Sun sign says who you are and your Moon sign how you feel; your rising sign shows how you come across, your first impression and how you start things. It is also where the twelve houses of your birth chart begin.

Why does it need my birth time?

As the Earth turns, the sign on the horizon changes about every two hours, so two people born on the same day can have completely different rising signs. That is why the calculation needs your birth time and city. It doesn't have to be exact to the minute, but the closer the time, the more reliable the result.

What if I don't know my birth time?

It is usually on your birth certificate or hospital record, or someone in the family remembers. Without it we can't tell your rising sign for sure, but your Sun and Moon signs are still calculated.

The 12 rising signs

Gemini: Curious, talkative, on the move. You ask questions and crack jokes in the first minute and look younger than you are.

Cancer: A soft, protective air. You test the room first; you open up once you know people and stay in your shell until then.

Leo: You get noticed. Your posture, your smile and your energy fill the stage, and your warmth draws people in.

Libra: Graceful, polite, looking for harmony. You smooth over conflict, and the first impression is always 'how lovely'.

Scorpio: Intense and private. A deep look, few words; people try to read you and rarely manage it.

Questions

Is my rising sign or my Sun sign more important?

They describe different things. Your Sun sign is your core; your rising sign is how it shows on the outside and the first impression you make. Many astrologers find daily horoscopes read from the rising sign more accurate.

Does the rising sign change over time?

No. It is set once, by the horizon at the moment of your birth, and stays the same for life.

How accurate is the rising sign calculation?

It uses real sky data; if your birth time and place are right, the result is exact. An error of 10-15 minutes can change it when the rising degree sits near the border between two signs.
