The houses

Where a placement plays out: the context. If planets are verbs and signs are adverbs, houses are nouns.

The houses show where an astrological placement is staged: its context.

Houses are odd and special, because they are not based on an astronomical object but on the Earth's 24-hour spin. Imagine a photograph of the sky at the moment you were born. The whole sky, above and below the horizon, is divided into twelve slices starting from the rising sign. These slices are the houses; each stands for a different area of your life.

The ascendant (AC) starts the 1st house; the midheaven (MC) the 10th. The four corners define the four "angular" houses.

Yörünge uses the Whole Sign house system: the entire rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd… The ancient method, stable at every latitude and the easiest to read. Some apps, like Co-Star, use Porphyry; others Placidus. House numbers can come out one apart; that is normal.

The twelve houses

  1. 1st house — Self and appearance. How you see yourself, the impression you leave on others; how you put yourself forward.
  2. 2nd house — Money and values. Your personal resources, the things that make you feel safe; material means and the identity you build on them.
  3. 3rd house — Communication and surroundings. What you know and your everyday environment: siblings, familiar patterns; how you communicate what you know.
  4. 4th house — Home and roots. Home life, family, close bonds, the past and its hold on you; your relationship with your (chosen) family.
  5. 5th house — Creativity and love. Creative self-expression, personal pleasure, play, flirtation.
  6. 6th house — Routine and health. How you are useful to the people you love, daily routines, the need for order.
  7. 7th house — Relationships and partnerships. Partnership and committed relationships; what you bring into your world through others; learning yourself through relationships.
  8. 8th house — Sharing and transformation. Your relationship with other people's resources, what is beyond your control: beginnings, endings, crises; the reshaping of your sense of self.
  9. 9th house — Philosophy and far travel. Open-mindedness, philosophy, culture and the exchange of ideas, expanding awareness, travel; how you expand what you know.
  10. 10th house — Career and public life. Your public self and commitments, career, how you want to be remembered, your legacy; how you go after your goals.
  11. 11th house — Friends and ideals. Your social world, friends and acquaintances, your relationship with groups; shared goals, idealism.
  12. 12th house — The unconscious and solitude. Your unconscious, dreams, fantasies; secrets; a more spiritual service, or the work of protecting your inner space.

Think of the houses in pairs

Like sister signs, opposite houses are thematically linked, and often stand for a balance that has to be struck between your private self and your public persona.
